Does the Double Portion of the Anointing Really Work?

That is the question Pastor Vishwas Masih took head on in Part 3 of the Anointing series at Life in Christ Shalom Church, Brampton, Ontario, preached live on Sunday, September 20, 2026. Many believers long for more of the Holy Spirit but secretly wonder whether a greater measure of the anointing is real, and whether it is truly available to them. This sermon answers that question from the life of Elisha, and lays out exactly what it takes to receive it.

The Anchor: Elisha Asked for Double, and Got It
“Let me inherit a double portion of your spirit.” (2 Kings 2:9)
The pastor read 2 Kings 2:1 to 14 aloud in full. When Elijah was about to be taken up, he asked Elisha what he wanted. Elisha did not ask for money, comfort, or position. He asked for a double portion of Elijah’s spirit, and he received it: the same mantle that Elijah threw down parted the Jordan in Elisha’s hands. Pastor Vishwas reminded the congregation that Jesus Himself said it: “You will do greater works than I” (John 14:12). The double portion is not a story from long ago. It is a promise for those who will position themselves for it.
Undivided Focus: Do Not Leave His Side
Elisha was tested again and again. At Gilgal, at Bethel, at Jericho, at the Jordan, Elijah told him to stay back, and every time Elisha answered that he would not leave him. Pastor Vishwas taught that receiving the anointing requires undivided focus. You cannot receive a double portion with a divided heart. David became wiser than his teachers and his enemies, Pastor said, because he never left God’s statutes (Psalm 119:98 to 100). Stay where the anointing is. Do not drift. Focus is the doorway to more.
Honor the One God Has Anointed
Before Elisha ever carried the mantle, he poured water on Elijah’s hands (2 Kings 3:11). He was a servant before he was a successor. The pastor taught that honoring your anointed leader, your mentor, your shepherd, is one of the great secrets of receiving the anointing. Moses told the Lord he wished all Israel would prophesy when the Spirit rested on the seventy elders (Numbers 11:16 to 29), because the anointing was never meant to be hoarded. But it flows to the humble, to the one who serves without complaint, and it dries up in the proud.

Guard What You Receive
“We have this treasure in earthen vessels.” (2 Corinthians 4:7)
God puts a priceless treasure in fragile clay. Pastor Vishwas warned that the anointing must be guarded or it spills. He called the congregation to be “above average” in excellence, to filter their speech, their hearing, and their seeing, and to cut back the hours lost to the mobile phone that quietly steal prayer time. “Open your mouth wide, and I will fill it,” God says (Psalm 81:10), but a mouth full of complaint leaves no room for blessing. The anointing breaks the yoke (Isaiah 10:27), yet we can take the yoke back up again if we are careless (Galatians 5:1). Humility and guardedness keep the oil flowing.
The Four Stations: Gilgal, Bethel, Jericho, and the Jordan
Elisha walked with Elijah through four places before the double portion fell, and Pastor Vishwas taught that each one is a spiritual station every believer must pass through. At Gilgal, the reproach is rolled away (Joshua 5:9): the shame of your past is removed. At Bethel, the house of God (Genesis 28), you learn to dwell in His presence. At Jericho, the place of walls, you learn that no wall can stand against a focused believer. And at the Jordan, you step into the water yourself and cross over into the greater works God promised. Nobody skips a station. Each one prepares you to carry more.
Practical Steps to Receive the Double Portion
- Set your focus. Refuse every invitation to stay back. Stay planted where God has put you, like Elisha refused to leave Elijah’s side.
- Serve with honor. Pour water on someone’s hands today: serve your leaders and your church faithfully, without seeking a title.
- Guard your gates. Filter what you speak, hear, and watch. Limit the phone time that is draining your prayer life.
- Aim above average. Give God your best effort in everything, and covet earnestly the best gifts (1 Corinthians 12:31).
- Open your mouth wide. Ask boldly for more of the Spirit, because whoever has will be given more (Matthew 13:12).
- Walk through every station. Let God roll away your reproach at Gilgal, dwell with Him at Bethel, face your Jericho walls, and cross your Jordan.
A Prayer to Receive
Father, I believe the double portion is real, and I believe it is for me. Take away every reproach from my past like at Gilgal. Teach me to dwell in Your house like at Bethel. Bring down every wall that stands against me like at Jericho. And give me the courage to step into the Jordan and cross over. Fill my mouth with Your blessing, guard the treasure You have placed in this earthen vessel, and break every yoke off my life by Your anointing. My Redeemer lives, and I will carry a double portion for Your glory. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
